Preparing for Pregnancy: Why Is Folic Acid So Important?

Planning to get pregnant? Find out why folic acid (Vitamin B9) should be your first step and learn when and how much you should take to protect your baby from developmental defects.

Preparing for Pregnancy: Why Is Folic Acid So Important?

If you have decided to get pregnant, you have probably already started dreaming about your future baby, perhaps even thinking about colors for the nursery. However, the first and perhaps most important step you will take to have a healthy baby is not choosing a stroller, but going to the pharmacy to buy Folic Acid.

So why is this small vitamin considered the "gold standard" of pregnancy planning? Why do doctors call it "baby insurance"? Let's talk about the miraculous effects and usage rules of folic acid.

What is folic acid (Vitamin B9) actually?

Folic acid is the synthetic form of Vitamin B9, one of the B group vitamins (the form found naturally in food is called "folate"). This vitamin is of vital importance for the creation of new cells and the formation of DNA in our bodies.

From the first moment a baby enters the mother's womb, it consists of rapidly dividing cells. The body needs a large amount of folic acid specifically for this division process to proceed correctly.

Why should I start specifically "before pregnancy"?

Many women start taking vitamins after learning they are pregnant. This is, of course, beneficial, but the most critical moment is often missed.

1. Prevention of neural tube defects

The neural tube, which forms the basis of the baby's brain and spinal column, forms and closes within the first 28 days of pregnancy. During this period, you may not even know you are pregnant yet.

If there is a folic acid deficiency in the body, the neural tube may not close completely. This can cause serious birth defects such as Spina Bifida (cleft spine) or Anencephaly (brain development disorder). Research shows that folic acid taken on time reduces these risks by up to 70%.

2. Reduction of miscarriage risk

Healthy DNA production helps the embryo attach firmly to the uterine wall and develop in the early stages of pregnancy. Vitamin B9 deficiency is associated with early miscarriages.

3. Prevention of anemia

Blood volume increases during pregnancy. Folic acid protects both the mother and the baby from anemia by participating in the production of red blood cells.

How much and when should it be taken?

The recommendation of the World Health Organization and gynecologists is clear:

  • Timing: It is necessary to start at least 1-3 months before trying to get pregnant and continue throughout the first 12 weeks of pregnancy (first trimester).

  • Dosage: A daily intake of 400 mcg (micrograms) of folic acid is standardly recommended.

Attention: If there has been a child born with nervous system defects in your family, if you have diabetes, or if you take epilepsy medications, your doctor may prescribe a higher dose (e.g., 5 mg) for you. Do not take high doses on your own.

Natural foods or pills?

The question "I eat healthy, do I need medicine?" is often asked. Unfortunately, it is difficult to collect the required amount through food alone, because a large part of folates is destroyed during cooking. However, it is essential to enrich your diet.

Foods richest in folic acid:

  • Green leafy vegetables: Spinach, lettuce, broccoli.

  • Legumes: Lentils, chickpeas, beans (you are lucky because these are abundant in Azerbaijani cuisine!).

  • Citrus fruits: Orange, lemon, tangerine.

  • Walnuts and hazelnuts.

  • Liver (However, it should be limited during pregnancy due to high Vitamin A content).

Conclusion

Preparing for pregnancy is not just about financial and spiritual readiness, but also preparing your body for this miracle. Taking folic acid is the easiest and most effective investment you can make for the health of your future child.

From today, make it a habit to take a small vitamin with a glass of water. Remember, a healthy mother means a healthy future.
