False Labor or True Labor: How to Tell the Difference?
As the final weeks of pregnancy approach, every woman feels as if she is sitting on pins and needles. Every small tension in your abdomen or every pain in your lower back makes you wonder: *"Is this it? Is labor starting? Should I grab my bag?"*. For first-time mothers in particular, confusing false labor pains with real labor is very common. Even experienced mothers can sometimes hesitate. These "practice contractions," known in medical terms as **Braxton Hicks**, prepare your body for the big day, but it is important to distinguish them from real contractions (to avoid rushing to the hospital for no reason\!). In this article, we will explain how to correctly read the signals your body sends and how to distinguish between "False" and "Real" labor. What are False Labor Pains (Braxton Hicks)? These contractions usually begin in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy (sometimes earlier). You can think of them as a "workout" for the uterus. The uterine muscles contract and relax, strengthening themselves for the upcoming marathon. **How to recognize false labor pains?** - **Irregularity:** There is no specific time interval between contractions. One comes now, another an hour later, and the next one tomorrow. - **Discomfort rather than pain:** You feel tightening or hardening in the front of your abdomen, but it is not unbearable pain. - **Temporary:** The contraction stops when you change your position (lying down, walking) or drink water. - **Does not intensify:** The intensity of the pain does not increase over time; on the contrary, it decreases. What are Real Labor Contractions like? When real labor begins, an irreversible process starts in your body. The purpose of these contractions is to open the cervix and push the baby into the birth canal. **Characteristics of real contractions:** - **Regularity:** Contractions come at precise intervals like a clock (e.g., every 10 minutes). - **Intensifying:** Over time, contractions become both more painful and last longer (starting from 30 seconds and extending up to 1 minute). - **Location is different:** The pain usually **starts in the lower back** and spreads toward the front of the abdomen (as if a strong belt is tightening). - **Does not stop:** No matter how much you lie down or take a shower, the contractions do not cease."Test" methods to know the difference If you are still not sure, try these simple tests:1. **Movement test:** Walk around. If the pain decreases as you walk, it is false. If walking increases the pain or if you are in too much pain to walk, it is real. 2. **Water test:** Drink a glass of water. Dehydration is a major cause of false labor pains. If it passes after drinking water, relax. 3. **Shower test:** Take a warm (not hot) shower. Warm water relaxes the muscles. False labor will disappear in the shower, while real labor will continue.Other signs that labor has started Contractions may not come alone. These signs also signal that the "big meeting" is approaching: - **Show (Mucus plug):** The discharge of the mucus plug (slightly bloody or brown in color) that protects the cervix. This can indicate that labor is a few days or hours away. - **Water breaking:** Rupture of the amniotic sac. This may not be a "flood" like in the movies; sometimes it is just a leak. If your water has broken, you must **go to the hospital immediately**, even if there are no contractions (risk of infection\!). - **Diarrhea:** Before birth, the body releases prostaglandins to clear the intestines. When to go to the hospital? (The 5-1-1 Rule) Unless your doctor has given you different instructions, follow the generally accepted **"5-1-1"** rule: - Contractions occur every **5 minutes**. - Each contraction lasts at least **1 minute**. - This pattern has been continuing for **1 hour**.If you have established this rhythm, it is time to grab your bag and head to the maternity hospital!Note: If there is bleeding, if your water has broken, if the baby's movements have decreased, or if you simply feel unwell, consult a doctor immediately without waiting for contractions. Contractions may seem scary, but they are actually your greatest helpers. Every contraction brings your baby a little closer to you. Trust your body; it knows what to do. Don't waste time manually calculating the duration and interval of contractions. Press the **"Contraction Timer"** button in the **Anacan app**. The app will tell you whether the contractions are false or real and whether it is time to go to the hospital.
