Pregnancy Week-by-Week: A Comprehensive Guide to All 40 Weeks

Pregnancy is the longest, most difficult, yet most unforgettable journey a woman can experience in her life. During 9 months (or more precisely, 40 weeks), your body literally creates a miracle. Although days may sometimes seem to pass very slowly, incredible changes are happening inside you every second.

"How big is my baby now?", "Why do I feel this way?", "What will happen this week?" are likely questions on your mind. In this detailed guide, we have mapped out this adventure for you by dividing your pregnancy into trimesters and weeks.

First Trimester: The Invisible Revolution (Weeks 1-13)

This period is the most critical and sensitive stage where the foundation is laid. Even if you don't look pregnant outwardly yet, a "hormonal storm" is ruling your body.

Weeks 1-4: The Beginning of Everything

The pregnancy calendar is calculated from the first day of your last period. This means you aren't actually pregnant during the first two weeks!

  • What's happening? Ovulation, fertilization, and the implantation of the cell into the uterus.

  • You: You might not feel anything at all, though sometimes light spotting occurs. It's too early for a test.

Weeks 5-8: Heartbeat

Your baby is now called an "embryo" and is developing rapidly.

  • Baby: The heart begins to beat (100-160 beats per minute!). The brain, spinal column, eyes, and ears are forming. At 8 weeks, it is the size of a raspberry seed.

  • You: "Welcome, morning sickness!" Nausea, fatigue, and breast tenderness reach their peak. It's time for your first ultrasound appointment.

Weeks 9-13: Human Form

The embryonic period ends; it is now a "fetus."

  • Baby: Fingers separate, and nails form. The baby begins to move (though you can't feel it yet). Genitals are forming. At 12 weeks, it is the size of a lemon.

  • You: Your waistline may thicken as the uterus grows. The important "Double Test" (screening) is performed at 12 weeks. Nausea usually subsides by the end of the trimester.

Second Trimester: The "Golden Era" (Weeks 14-27)

For many women, this is the most comfortable period of pregnancy. Your energy returns, your belly begins to show in a sweet way, and that magnificent moment arrives — the first kick!

Weeks 14-17: Rapid Growth

  • Baby: Bones are hardening, and the skin is thin and transparent. It can make facial expressions (frowning, smiling). At 16 weeks, it is the size of an avocado.

  • You: Your appetite increases. Nosebleeds and gum sensitivity may occur (due to increased blood circulation). Are you impatient to learn the gender? There isn't much longer to go!

Weeks 18-22: Life Felt

  • Baby: Hearing develops — it hears your voice and your heartbeat. Movements become stronger. At 20 weeks, it is the size of a banana.

  • You: You feel the first movements (quickening) — like butterflies fluttering in your stomach. Between weeks 20-22, a detailed anatomical ultrasound ("Doppler") is performed to check all the baby's organs.

Weeks 23-27: Viability

  • Baby: Lungs are preparing to breathe. It can open and close its eyes. The sense of taste develops. At 27 weeks, it is the size of a cauliflower.

  • You: Your belly grows rapidly, and stretch marks may appear (don't neglect moisturizing!). Heartburn and leg cramps might bother you. The glucose loading test is performed during this period.

Third Trimester: Final Preparations (Weeks 28-40)

The finish line is in sight! Your baby is preparing to come into the world, and you are focusing on birth both physically and emotionally.

Weeks 28-32: Time to Gain Weight

  • Baby: The brain develops rapidly. A subcutaneous layer of fat forms, and the baby "rounds out." It can open its eyes enough to react to light. At 32 weeks, it is the size of a butternut squash.

  • You: Sleeping becomes difficult, and you may feel shortness of breath (as the uterus presses against the diaphragm). False contractions (Braxton Hicks) may start — your body is practicing.

Weeks 33-36: Immunity and Position

  • Baby: It gains immunity by receiving your antibodies. Bones (except for the skull) harden completely. It begins to take the birth position (head down). At 36 weeks, it is the size of a melon.

  • You: Breathing becomes easier as the baby drops lower, but the need to go to the toilet increases. It's the perfect time to prepare your hospital bag!

Weeks 37-40+: Meeting Time!

The pregnancy is now considered "full term."

  • Baby: Organs are fully ready. The hair covering the body (lanugo) falls off. Weight varies between 3-4 kg. It is the size of a watermelon and is waiting for you.

  • You: Your water could break or contractions could start at any moment. The cervical plug (bloody show) may appear. Be patient; nature knows its job.

This 40-week marathon is sometimes tiring, sometimes painful, but a process whose result is worth the world. Every woman's and every pregnancy's story is different. Don't compare yourself to others; believe in the power of your body.
