When Can You Learn the Baby's Gender? The Truth About Ultrasound and Blood Tests

Boy or girl? The most accurate ways to find out your baby's gender: Ultrasound (USG), NIPT blood test, and folk beliefs. At which week can you get an accurate result and can an ultrasound be wrong?

When Can You Learn the Baby's Gender? The Truth About Ultrasound and Blood Tests
As soon as you hear the news of your pregnancy, the second question everyone asks (usually right after "congratulations") is typically: *"What is your heart's desire: a Boy or a Girl?"* Finding out the baby's gender is one of the most exciting stages of pregnancy for parents. Blue or pink? What color should the nursery be decorated in? When to start choosing a name? While some moms want it to be a surprise, most of us are impatient to uncover this secret as soon as possible. But what does science tell us? When is the earliest and most accurate time to find out the gender? Let’s separate medical methods from our grandmothers' "belly shape" predictions one by one. When is gender biologically determined? Interestingly, your baby's gender is actually determined at the **exact second** fertilization occurs\! It all depends on the sperm coming from the father: - If a sperm carrying an **X chromosome** fertilizes the egg, it will be a **GIRL (XX)**. - If a sperm carrying a **Y chromosome** fertilizes the egg, it will be a **BOY (XY)**.However, even though everything is genetically ready, it takes time for physical differences (genital organs) to form and become visible on an ultrasound.Method 1: Ultrasound Examination (USM) – The Gold Standard In Azerbaijan and around the world, ultrasound is the most common and accessible way to find out the baby's gender. When is it visible? - **Weeks 11-14 (Early probability):** Based on the "Nub theory" (the angle of the genital tubercle), experienced doctors may offer a prediction. However, during this period, girl and boy organs look very similar, so the chance of error is high. - **Weeks 16-20 (Accurate result):** This is the ideal time to learn the gender. During the detailed anatomical examination (Doppler) performed at the 20th week, the doctor can clearly see the genital organs. Can an ultrasound be wrong? Yes, although rare, mistakes do happen. - **Baby's position:** If the baby has its legs tightly crossed or its back is turned, the doctor may not see anything. - **Umbilical cord:** Sometimes the umbilical cord gets caught between the baby's legs and can mistakenly look like a penis.Method 2: NIPT (DNA Blood Test) – Faster, More Accurate If you don't want to wait until the 16th week, medicine offers a faster way: **Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT)**. - **How does it work?** During pregnancy, a portion of the baby's DNA passes into the mother's blood. This DNA analysis is performed simply by taking blood from the mother. If a Y chromosome is found in the blood, it's a boy; if not, it's a girl. - **When is it done?** From the **10th week** of pregnancy onwards. - **Accuracy:** Higher than 99%. - **Purpose:** This test is primarily done to check for genetic disorders like Down syndrome; learning the gender is a "bonus" of the test. It is more expensive than an ultrasound.Method 3: Invasive Tests (Amniocentesis) These tests (sampling of amniotic fluid) provide 100% accurate results, but **they are never performed solely for gender determination**. Because they carry a risk of miscarriage, they are only prescribed by a doctor when there is a serious suspicion of genetic disease.Folk Beliefs and Myths: What do grandmothers say? Before medicine advanced, people tried to guess the gender using various signs. While these are not scientifically proven, they can be fun:1. **Belly shape:** "If the belly is pointed (sharp), it's a boy; if it's spread out, it's a girl." (Scientific fact: Belly shape depends on your body structure and muscles). 2. **Nausea:** "If you vomit a lot in the mornings, it's a girl." (Scientific fact: Some studies suggest that HCG levels are higher in female pregnancies, which may cause more morning sickness, but this is not a definitive rule). 3. **Appetite:** "If you crave sweets, it's a girl; if you crave salty/sour things, it's a boy." 4. **Beauty:** "A girl takes away the mother's beauty." (Acne and blemishes).Gender Reveal Party Trend In recent years, **"Gender Parties"**, which have become popular in Azerbaijan, turn finding out the gender into a celebration. The doctor writes the gender on a piece of paper and puts it in an envelope, and the parents give the envelope to a company that prepares balloons, cakes, or colored smoke. The appearance of blue or pink becomes an unforgettable memory for the family. While learning the baby's gender is exciting, the most important thing is their health. Whether you find out the result via ultrasound or a blood test, don't forget to allow for a small margin of error (especially with ultrasound). Boy or girl – it doesn't matter, as long as they are a healthy and blessed child. To track your pregnancy weeks and never miss your ultrasound appointments, you can use the **Anacan app**.
