Baby Rashes and Dermatitis: When to See a Doctor?
We understand the panic you feel when you suddenly see red spots, bumps, or peeling on your newborn baby's smooth, silky skin. Questions like *"What did I do wrong?", "Is it something I ate?", "Is this an allergy?"* might keep you awake at night. Stay calm, dear parents. A baby's skin is very thin and sensitive, and at the same time, it is trying to adapt to a new environment (air, clothes, bacteria). Therefore, the appearance of various rashes in the first months is **very common and usually harmless**. In this article, we will explain the most common skin problems, how to manage them at home, and in which cases you should immediately rush to the doctor.1. Neonatal Acne (Baby Acne) If you see tiny red rashes on your baby's face, especially on the cheeks, that look like teenage acne, this is most likely **neonatal acne**. - **Cause:** The influence of hormones passed from mother to baby during pregnancy. - **What to do:** Nothing\! Do not squeeze the pimples or apply cream. Daily washing is sufficient. It usually goes away on its own within 3-4 weeks.2. Diaper Rash This is perhaps the most common problem. It appears as redness or sores in the diaper area (buttocks, groin). - **Cause:** Long-term contact of the skin with urine and feces, a moist environment, or a reaction to a new diaper brand. - **Treatment:** - **Change frequently:** Change the diaper as soon as it gets dirty. - **Air bath:** Leave the baby's bottom uncovered several times a day. - **Protective cream:** Apply a thick protective cream containing zinc oxide (Sudocrem, Desitin, etc.) at every diaper change.3. Heat Rash (Miliaria) If you see tiny pink dots in the neck folds, armpits, or on the back, this is heat rash. - **Cause:** The baby's sweat glands are not yet fully developed. Over-wrapping or hot weather blocks the sweat ducts. - **What to do:** Keep the baby cool. Do not dress them in layers. Give a lukewarm bath and keep the skin dry. Stay away from oily creams.4. Atopic Dermatitis (Diathesis / Eczema) The skin becomes dry, scaly, and itchy. It usually occurs on the cheeks, arms, and behind the knees. - **Cause:** Genetic predisposition or allergens (food, dust, laundry detergent). - **Care:** The most important condition is to keep the skin moist (**Emollient** creams). Do not make the water too hot when bathing and do not use soaps that dry the skin. Special creams should only be used with a doctor's advice.5. Seborrhea (Dandruff / "Cradle Cap") Yellowish, oily scales appear on the baby's scalp and eyebrows. - **Cause:** Overactivity of the sebaceous glands. - **What to do:** Soften by applying baby oil to the head before bathing, then comb with a soft brush and wash with shampoo. This is harmless and does not bother the baby.Red Flags: When to Consult a Doctor? If the situation does not change despite home care or if the following symptoms occur, contact a pediatrician:1. **Fever:** If there is a fever (above 38°C) along with the rash. This can be a sign of infection (e.g., measles, rubella). 2. **Pus and Oozing:** If the tips of the rashes are purulent, if there are watery blisters, or if they are bleeding. 3. **Rapid spread:** If the redness spreads rapidly across the body. 4. **Baby's condition:** If the baby is lethargic, has lost their appetite, or cries inconsolably (from itching or pain). 5. **Petechial rash (Glass test):** If the redness **does not whiten** (does not fade) when you press a glass cup against the skin, this could be a sign of a serious infection like meningitis. **Call emergency services\!**90% of baby skin problems are solved with proper hygiene and patience. Do not rush to label every rash as an "allergy" and start a diet immediately. If you have doubts, do not diagnose yourself. You can take and save photos of the rashes in the **Anacan app** so that you can show the dynamics when you go to the doctor. May your days be as clear and bright as your baby's skin!
